Old Phuket Town is my favourite area in Phuket. I always wish I could spend an extra day strolling on the streets lined with colourful buildings with Sino-Portuguese architecture. Moreover, on Sunday evenings, there is a bustling market that offers a wide array of food stalls, local art and stationery vendors, live music, and much more. If you plan to visit Phuket Town, here are a few things you can add to your itinerary.
How to reach Old Phuket Town
If you are staying in the Patong area, the most efficient and affordable way to reach the old Phuket town is by taking the Phuket Blue bus from a nearby bus stop. It is recommended to start your journey early in order to have enough time to explore the place fully. Alternatively, you can hire a Tuk Tuk, but this option may prove to be a little costly. The buses start running from 9 AM in the morning.
Breakfast at COMFEE Phuket
Start your day with a nice cup of latte and a cute little pastry or cheesecake from Comfee. This is also a great place to work from. I would definitely recommend trying out the blueberry cheesecake!
Buy Souvenirs from Sitao Ceramic Studio
If you are someone who loves to collect souvenirs, just like me, then I would highly recommend this place for you to buy handmade ceramic fridge magnets, coffee mugs, and other collectibles. Additionally, they offer classes where you can create your own items. However, please note that it will take at least a week for post-processing and glazing.
Have Ice-cream from Torry’s Ice cream
This place is extremely well-known, which might result in a wait time of 15-30 minutes after receiving a token. The interiors are beautifully designed and the ice creams are influenced by traditional Thai desserts. Although slightly pricey, it is definitely worth trying out. I would recommend the black glutinous rice with coconut ice cream as it adds a unique and delicious flavor to the taste.
Try out different cheese tarts at Aung Ku’s cafe
If you’re looking for a beautiful cafe that’s also a popular spot to snap some Instagram-worthy photos, look no further than this one. It’s hands down the most stunningly designed cafe in the area. And if you’re looking for a delicious treat to go along with your stunning photos, the mango and blueberry cheese tarts are a must-try.
Lunch at Hog’s Head
I visited this market with the sole purpose of checking out this Harry Potter themed café. If you’re a Potterhead, this café is a must-visit. The butterbeer is a unique and delicious drink that you should definitely try. It has a buttery froth that adds to its distinct flavour. I also enjoyed Harry’s birthday cake, coconut pastry, and spaghetti. Additionally, this café is a great spot to take Instagram-worthy photos.
Stroll at the Sunday night market and try out the delicacies
On Sundays this place is completely lit up and becomes so lively with number of stalls line upOn Sundays this place is completely lit up and becomes so lively with number of stalls lined up. I decided to try out all the vegetarian food items such as the pink vegetable dumplings – different from what we have in India but definitely spicy and delicious, next up were seaweed Takoyaki, Chinese dumplings called Jiucai with fillings of bamboo shoot, garlic and chives which were also very delicious and unique. And ended my day by shopping for some handmade art stationery and having Thai mango salad which instantly became my favourite.
As you stroll around, you will discover a plethora of cafes, shops and photography spots. The On On Hotel, famous for accommodating Leonardo DiCaprio during the filming of The Beach, is a major attraction of this charming place. These are just a few highlights, but there is much more to explore on your own.
